Sartitschala ( Georgian სართიჭალა ) is a village in the municipality of Gardabani in the Georgian administrative region of Niederkartlien and a former settlement of the Caucasian Germans . Until 1944 the village was called Marienfeld.
history
Like some other settlements in the region, Marienfeld was founded in the early 19th century by German settlers from Württemberg . After the attack by the German Wehrmacht on the Soviet Union in 1941, all Germans from the western part of the country were forcibly resettled to Central Asia and Siberia . As a result, the village was renamed to its current name in 1944 and mainly ethnic Georgians settled there.
Today, 90% of the population of the village, who live mainly from agriculture, is made up of ethnic Georgians. After 1990, a number of larger food processing companies were established, for example a pig farm with a slaughterhouse and a tree nursery. In addition, due to its proximity to Tbilisi, the town is popular as a residence for wealthy capital city dwellers.
