The municipality Samtredia ( Georgian სამტრედიის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Samtrediis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Imereti region in western Georgia .
geography
The administrative center of the municipality is the eponymous city of Samtredia . The 364.1 km² municipality borders in the north on the municipality Choni , in the east on the municipality Zqaltubo and in the southeast on the municipality Wani , all also in Imereti. It is bounded in the south by the municipality of Chochatauri and in the southwest on a short section by the municipality of Lanchchuti , both in the Guria region , and in the west by the Abasha municipality in the Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti region .
The municipalities on both sides of the Rioni River are predominantly in the eastern part of the Colchian Plain , also known there as the Imeretian Plain , which gradually rises from around 15 m above sea level in the west to around 60 m in the northeast part of the area. South of the Rioni, the foothills of the Mescheti Mountains rise relatively steeply up to a maximum height of about 750 m . The border to the municipality of Abascha or Mingrelien is marked by the Rioni and its right tributary Zcheniszqali , while the right Rioni tributary Gubiszqali crosses the northeast . From the left the Chewiszqali flows into the Rioni, which partly forms the border to the municipalities of Tschochatauri and Guria.
Population and administrative division
At 48,562 inhabitants (2014), the number of inhabitants has fallen by around a fifth compared to the previous census (60,456 inhabitants in 2002), slightly above the national average. The trend that had been ongoing since the 1970s (maximum 67,141 inhabitants in 1970) thus accelerated. Nevertheless, the municipality is still one of the most densely populated in the country.

history
From the collapse of the Kingdom of Georgia in the 15th century until the 19th century, the area belonged virtually continuously to the Kingdom of Imereti . While Georgia was part of the Russian Empire and until the early years of the Soviet Union , it was predominantly part of the Ujesds Kutais of the Kutais Governorate formed in 1846 ; only a small part in the southwest of the area belonged to its Ujesd Senaki . In 1930 the Samtredia Rajon was formed. After the independence of Georgia in 1995 the Rajon was assigned to the newly formed region of Imereti and in 2006 it was converted into a municipality.

From the international trunk road S1 ( ს 1 ) from Tbilisi to the Russian or Abkhazian border (on this section also European route 60 ) branches off there the international trunk road S12 ( ს 12 ), also European route 692. The S1 from the east to Samtredia became in the 2010s expanded to a newly routed motorway ; the continuation to the west parallel to the S12 with a new bridge over the Rioni is under construction (status 2017).
The national road Sch12 ( შ 12 , from there on to Kutaisi) leads from Samtredia to the northern neighboring town of Choni , and the Sch103 ( შ 103 ) also branches off further east from the (old) S1 . In the east of the municipality, the S1 branches off the Sch104 ( შ 104 ), which also leads to Kutaisi through the villages to the right of the Rioni in the south of the neighboring municipality of Zqaltubo.
