Erik Forssman

Erik Forssman (born December 27, 1915 in Berlin ; † June 17, 2011 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Swedish art historian who spent most of his life in Germany.

Life

Forssman was born as the son of the Swedish engineer and aircraft designer Villehad Forssman in Berlin and grew up in Kassel . He worked for the Leipzig art publisher EA Seemann and, in addition to his work, began in Leipzig in 1942 to study art history, German and philosophy. After the war he continued his studies in Sweden. In the first few years he worked as a proofreader at Bermann-Fischer-Verlag in Stockholm . In 1956 he received his doctorate in Stockholm with a dissertation entitled Column and Ornament .

In 1957 Forssman became director of the Anders Zorn Museum in Mora , Sweden. From 1971 to 1984 he was professor for art history at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg . In 1972 he was accepted as a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

Forssman emerged in science through his research on Andrea Palladio and Palladianism in Europe, on Karl Friedrich Schinkel and on the architectural theories of the Renaissance and Mannerism .
