Martvili ( Georgian მარტვილი ) is a city in the Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti region in western Georgia .

While Georgia was part of the Soviet Union , the place, which received city rights in 1982 , was called Gegetschkori from 1936 to 1990 , named after the revolutionary Aleksi (Sascha) Gegetschkori (1887–1928) who was born nearby .

economy

Most of the population lives from agriculture or is self-sufficient. In the town center there are a few shops and markets as well as a supermarket.

There is no longer any industry or factories, many empty, partly dilapidated buildings are reminiscent of times when there was still more work here. There is a public hospital, a police station, a fire brigade and two banks. Every Friday there is a large market near the football field, where everyone can offer their own goods.

Culture

In the center of the village is the local history museum, which was founded in 1957 and renovated in 2011.

religion

According to legend, the Martvili Chkondidi Cathedral, built on the roots of an oak, was built in the late 7th century. According to tradition of the monks, another church building is said to have stood here in the 1st century, built on the place where Apostle Andreas is said to have converted some locals to Christianity at an oak tree. This monastery on a hill in the center of the village is well worth seeing.

Sports

The football club FC Merani Martwili , based in Martwili, plays in the Umaghlessi League , the highest Georgian league. The soccer field has two grandstands and around 2500 seats.
