Saertaschorisso mnischwnelobis gsa S7 ( Georgian : საერთაშორისო მნიშვნელობის გზა ს -7 ) is a 60 kilometer long highway in Georgia . The road leads from Marneuli to the Armenian border. There the road leads as M6 to Vanadzor . The entire S7 is part of European route 001 .

history

The S7 was already of great importance as a north-south axis through the southern Caucasus during the times of the Soviet Union . On the Georgian side it runs through relatively flat terrain and has been renumbered as S7. The Armenian section has been renumbered as M6 . Since the end of the Soviet Union, it has been the most important transit route between the two countries.

In the 1990s, however, the border crossing was temporarily closed due to ethnic tensions between the Armenians and the majority of the Azerbaijanis in this part of Georgia . Therefore, during this time, all international traffic between Marneuli and Vanadzor ran on the S6 or European route 117 via Bolnissi and Stepanawan , which, in contrast to the European route 001 on the Armenian side, which mainly runs on the plain and in river valleys, overcomes an almost 1,600  m high pass and one Has to cross a tunnel at a height of almost 1800  m .
