history
In the times of the Soviet Union, the road played a relatively minor role. After 1991 the road passed through Georgia and Armenia . The Armenian section is the M1 , the Georgian section has been renumbered as S11. Because of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh , Turkey closed the borders with Armenia. Since then, the S11 has become an important transit line for traffic from Armenia to Turkey because it is the shortest connection between the two countries. For Armenia, the road also provides access to the ports of Batumi , although it is a branch route.
