The European route 691 ( E 691 for short ) is a European trunk road in the Lesser Caucasus and the adjacent mountain areas. Geographically, it runs along its entire length in Asia .
The road leads from Ashtarak , in Armenia not far from the capital Yerevan on the E 117 , via Gyumri to Akhaltsikhe in Georgia , from there to Turkey via Kars to Horasan , where there is a connection to the E 80 .
The road initially only ran from Ashtarak to Wale in Georgia, but was extended to Horasan in 2004 in order to create a connection to the European road network in Turkey. Thus it represents the shortest road connection between Armenia and Turkey with a detour via Georgia, because the direct border and between the neighboring states are closed for political reasons and the significantly shorter direct connection is therefore not passable.
