Aspindsa ( Georgian ასპინძა ) is a Daba ( minor city ) in the Georgian administrative region of Samtskhe-Javakheti .
geography
Aspindsa is located at an altitude of 1090 m on the Kura River, 34 kilometers southeast of Akhaltsikhe . It has 2379 inhabitants (2014). Aspindsa is the administrative center of Aspindsa Municipality .
history
The word "Aspindsa" is derived from a Persian word "اسب انداز”Which means“ a place to rest ”. The city was founded in 888, as Leonti Mroweli ( Georgian ლეონტი მროველი ) relates -
"Nasra was caught near Samtskhe and killed by Aspindsa in 888"
At the end of the 16th century, Aspindsa was conquered by the Ottoman Turks . According to her census, "Aspindsa was a large village made up of 50 families with gardens and orchards". The village is mentioned in the chronicles of Sumbat Davitisdze ( Georgian სუმბატ დავითის ძე ) and Vakhushti ( Georgian ვახუშტი ).
In 1770 a battle between the combined troops of the Turks and the Avars, led by Malachil Unzukul and the Georgian army of Erekle II, took place in front of Aspindze .
