Ivan Javakhishvili

Ivan Jawachishvili ( Georgian ივანე ჯავახიშვილი ; born  April 11, 1876 in Tbilisi , Russian Empire ; † November 18, 1940 ibid) was a Georgian scientist. He was a professor of history and co-founder of the Tbilisi State University .

Life

He was born as the son of the educationalist Aleksandre Dschawachischwili, passed the Abitur in 1895 at the 1st Classical Gymnasium in Tbilisi. In 1899 he graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Languages ​​at the University of Saint Petersburg . This was followed by a two-year postgraduate master’s degree. In 1898 he learned German in Königsberg .

From 1901 to 1902 he was a visiting scholar at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin , studied with Adolf von Harnack and Karl Krumbacher , and translated historical sources from Georgian into German. Harnack tried in vain to win him over to the Berlin University.

In 1902 he went on a scientific expedition to Mount Sinai with Nikolai Jakowlewitsch Marr , where he secured old Georgian manuscripts . From 1903 to 1917 Dschawachischwili was a private lecturer at the Armenian-Georgian-Iranian Department in the Faculty of Oriental Languages ​​at the University of St. Petersburg with the field of cartelology . During the semester break he gave public lectures on ancient Georgian history, philosophy and art in Tbilisi.

Javakhishvili was the driving force behind the establishment of Tbilisi State University . He worked out a foundation plan and recruited patrons . On January 30, 1918, he gave the first lecture of the newly founded university ( "The Personality of Man and Its Significance in Old Georgian Philosophical Literature" ). From 1919 to 1926 he was rector of the university and from 1918 to 1938 dean of the historical faculty. From 1936 to 1940 he headed the historical department of the State Museum of Georgia . In 1939 Javakhishvili became a full member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences .

Javachishvili was feuding with the Communist Party for decades. In 1924 he supported the August uprising in Georgia . In 1926 he was therefore replaced as university rector and placed under house arrest for several years . In 1936 he refused to become a member of the CPSU . There were organized student protests demanding his removal from university service. The party reconciled with Javachishvili only late, and he was elected to the parliament of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic .

Javakhishvili wrote 170 scientific research papers and 20 monographs, including a four-volume history of Georgia, a three-volume history of Georgian law, a two-volume history of Economy of Georgia, a history of Georgian music, a study on the relationship of the Kartvelian and kauskasischen languages , a Georgian paleography , a Georgian mint and metrology, a Georgian diplomacy and a thesis on sources and methods of historical studies.

Javakhishvili died of a heart attack while giving a lecture at Tbilisi University.

Awards

After his death, Javachishvili was buried in the garden of the Tbilisi State University . Tbilisi State University got his name in 1989. The highest award of the university is called the Ivan Yawachishvili Medal , the highest award of the Georgian Academy of Sciences is the Ivan Javakhishvili Prize . His portrait is depicted on the front of the Georgian five- lari note.
