The Georgian National Academy of Sciences ( Georgian საქართველოს მეცნიერებათა ეროვნული აკადემია / Sakartwelos Meznierebata Akademia ) brings together 63 scientific research institutions in Georgia that conduct basic research. She coordinates research in Georgia and maintains connections abroad. Their seat is Tbilisi .

Members

The academy has 69 members, 70 corresponding and 73 foreign members. The president is Tamas Gamqrelidse . The academy is divided into the departments of mathematics and physics , geosciences , applied mechanics , mechanical engineering and control processes, chemistry and chemical technology , biology , physiology and experimental medicine , scientific problems in agriculture , social sciences, and linguistics and literature . It includes the Tbilisi Botanical Garden and the Batumi Botanical Garden .

history

It was founded in 1941. Forerunners were the Georgian branch of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and the research centers of the State University of Tbilisi founded in the 1920s and 1930s . The spire of the building is still adorned with a Soviet star today.

The first president was the mathematician and physicist Nikolos Muschelishvili . He headed the academy until 1972. He was followed by the mathematician Ilia Wekua (1972–1977), Ewgeni Charadze (1977–1986) and Albert Tawchelidze (1986–2005). From February 2005 the linguist and orientalist Tamas Gamqrelidse was president of the academy, his successor was Giorgi Kvesitadze in June 2013.

The academy is a member of the European Federation of National Academies for the Sciences and Humanities . She publishes the scientific journal Bulletin of the Georgian Academy of Sciences .

In addition to this academy, there is the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Science , the Georgian Academy of Biomedical Science, and the Abkhaz Regional Academy of Sciences . They too are based in Tbilisi.
