Sarıkamış ( Kurdish Qamuşan , Armenian Եղեգնիկ Jeghegnik ) is a city and a district in the province of Kars in northeastern Turkey . The third largest city in the province is located about 54 km southwest of the provincial town of Kars on the D 957, the E 691 . It is also touched by the railway line that runs from Erzurum to the Armenian border.

history

Sarıkamış was occupied by the Russian armed forces during the Russo-Ottoman War (1877-1878) and remained under Russian rule until the peace treaty of Brest-Litovsk in 1918. During the First World War , the Battle of Sarıkamış took place near the city from December 22, 1914 to January 15, 1915 .

landscape

The city is located in a largely steppe-like area, which is part of an extensive high volcanic plateau (so-called Armenian highlands ) that extends in the east to Lake Sevan in Armenia and in the south to Lake Van . As a result of the volcanic formation, there are widespread occurrences of obsidian , among others. a. also directly on the national road D 957 (E 691) from Karakurt to Kars .

Sarıkamış County is located in the southwest of the province and borders on Selim County to the north and Kağızman County to the east . In addition, the provinces of Erzurum in the west and Ağrı in the south form the border.

In addition to the district town (2018: 39% of the district population) there are 55 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 474 residents. Six of them have around a thousand or more inhabitants: Başköy (1,739), Eşmeçayır (1,165), İnkaya (1,126), Çamyazı (1,119), Karakurt (989) and Armutlu (956 pop.). In terms of population, the district is in third place in the province, its population density is below the provincial average (of 28 inhabitants per km²).
