Arpaçay (until 1922 Zaruşat , dt. Sarischat ) is a city and capital of the district of the same name in the north- east Turkish province (İl) Kars . The city is located about 33 km northeast of the provincial capital Kars on the D 010 trunk road.
The district is the northernmost district of the province and borders in the west on the district of Susuz , in the south on the central district ( Merkez ) Kars and in the southeast on the district Akyaka . In the north, the Çıldır district ( Ardahan province ) and the lake of the same name form the border, in the east the neighboring country of Armenia is 10 km away. The city and the district were named after the Arpaçay River.
Arpaçay was part of the Ottoman Empire since the 16th century . Between 1877 and 1918 it was part of the Russian Empire and was called Grenaderskoye between 1905 and 1918.
At the end of 2018, the district comprised the district town (16.5% of the district's population) and 48 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 302 residents. Doğruyol is the largest village (992 inhabitants). The population density is the lowest in the province and, with 15 inhabitants per square kilometer, is just half the average for the province (28).
