Digor ( Armenian Տեկոր / Tekor ) is a city and a district in the province of Kars in northeastern Turkey . Digor is located about 38 km southeast of the provincial capital on the D 070 trunk road. The city was founded during the Russian rule in the 19th century ( Kars Oblast ). After about 40 years, Digor was liberated from the Russian occupation on October 22, 1920.
The district Digor was spun off in 1953 by the county Kağızman. It is located in the southeast of the province and borders the central district ( Merkez ) Kars in the north and west, the Kağızman district in the southwest and the Iğdır province in the south . There are national borders with the Republic of Armenia in the east of the district.
Well-known sights are the Armenian Monastery of Horomos , the Tekor Basilica , the Cathedral of Mren and the Chzgonk Monastery from the 7th century, which were destroyed by Turkey after the western part of Armenia was captured by Turkey in 1920 .
In addition to the district town, the district consists of the community Dağpınar (3,476 inhabitants), 25 km southeast of Kars and 12 km northwest of Digor. 37 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 438 inhabitants complete the district. The largest village is Kocaköy (2,026 inhabitants). The population density is below the provincial average.
