Kağızman ( Armenian Կագհզւան Kaghswan , Kurdish Kaxizman ) is a city and a district in the province of Kars in northeastern Turkey . Other older names are Arşarunik, Kızıldere, and Narinkale. The second largest city in the province is located about 50 km south of the provincial capital Kars on the highways D 080 and D 965. According to the city seal, Kağızman was raised to a municipality in 1923 .

Kağızman is located in a tectonically active area where 13 earthquakes have occurred in the past 800 years - the last one in 1962. In addition to the earthquakes, earthquakes also occur. The highest mountains are the volcanic Aladağ in the north (3138 m) with the Küçük Aladağ (2532 m), the Yağlıca Dağı (2961 m) in the northeast and the Kazıkkıran Dağı. The most important river in Kağızman is the Macaw , which, coming from Erzurum, flows through Kağızman from west to east for more than 50 km. Tributaries of the Aras, which arise in Kağızman, include the Kötek Deresi, Abdullah Deresi, Azathan Deresi, Tuzlu Dere, Kaput Deresi and the Todan Deresi. In addition to these rivers, there is also the 1125 km² lake Denizgölü in the west of the district, the Kamışlı Gölü and the Çengilli Gölü and various other lakes.

The Armenian Eghegnamor Monastery from the 11th century is located in the district .

Kağızman County is located in the south of the province and borders on Sarıkamış County in the west, Selim County in the northwest, the Central County in the north and Digor County in the northeast. The border is formed by the Ağrı Province in the south and the Iğdır Province in the southeast .

In addition to the district town (2018: 40% of the district population), the district consists of 62 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 441 residents. Six of them have over a thousand inhabitants: Çayarası (1,691), Çengilli (1,637), Günindi (1,554), Ağdam (1,471), Akören (1,099) and Kuloğlu (1,071 inh .). The smallest village in the province ( Sağbaş , population 31) is also located in the district. The second most populous district with its population density (25) does not reach the average population of 28 inhabitants per km².
