Akyaka (formerly Kızılçakçak , Kurdish Şûrêgel ) is a city and a district in the province of Kars in northeastern Turkey . Akyaka is about 47 km east of the provincial capital Kars . Akyaka was called Kızılçakçak until 1961. The city lies on the railway line from Kars to the Armenian border and on the D 060 trunk road.

The smallest district of the province is located in the northeast of the province and borders on Arpaçay district in the west, the central district of Kars in the south and Armenia in the east. The circle was formed in 1988 from the eastern part of the Arpaçay district and was a Bucak in this until then . At the last census before the change of area (1985) the Bucak had 17,457 inhabitants, including the Bucak merkezi Akyaka 3,235 inhabitants.

The border crossing to Armenia has been closed since the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan began in 1993. The Armenian Holy Savior Monastery of Jerasgawors , which fell victim to the damming of the river, was located near the city of Akyaka .

At the end of 2018, the district consisted of the district town (18.4% of the district population) and 26 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 342 residents. Demirkent is the largest village with 1,079 inhabitants. The population density of the district is slightly below the provincial average of 28 inhabitants per km².
