Çıldır ( Armenian Հիւսիսեան / Hiusisean ; Georgian ჩრდილი / Chrdili , Russian Чилдыр ) is a city and a district in the Ardahan Province in northeastern Turkey . Çıldır is located in the east of the province and borders on the province of Kars in the south . The district consists of the district town of 34 villages ( köy ), of which Eskibeyrehatun (499 Ew.) Is the largest. The district town is home to around 29 percent of the district's population.
Çıldır borders Georgia (66 km) to the north and east and Armenia (3 km) to the south-east . The Aktaş border crossing to Georgia is located in Çıldır. Of the 1163 km² area, 1016 km² consists of land and the rest of the 120 km² large Çıldır Lake and 14 km² of the 27 km² large Aktaş Lake , the remaining 13 km² of which are on Georgian territory. There the lake is called Tba Kartsakhi. There are only two rivers in the county, the Kura and the Karasu. The highest mountains in Çıldır are the Keldağ and the Gökdağ at over 3000 meters.
The population consists of Turks, some of whom come from Kyptschaks, Karapapak-Terekeme Turks, Georgians and Tatars .
Çıldır was part of the Ottoman Empire for a long time , then came under the Russian Empire towards the end of the 19th century and was part of the Kars Oblast . After the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia in 1917 and the collapse of the Tsarist empire, Çıldır was under Georgian rule for two years. The Republic of Armenia made claims to the area during this period, which led to a conflict with the Republic of Georgia in 1920 . Since February 25, 1921 ( Treaty of Kars and Moscow) Çıldır has belonged to the Republic of Turkey.
