Posof ( Georgian ფოცხოვი / Pozchowi ) is a city and a district in the Ardahan Province in northeastern Turkey . The Georgian name is Postkhovi, then later Duğur and currently Posof. The name Posof actually refers to a region. The place Posof was named after this region.
Posof is in the north of Ardahan and borders in the north with Georgia and the province of Artvin . To the east of Posof is the Türkgözü border crossing to Georgia.
The district of Posof consists of 49 villages ( Köy ) in addition to the district town . 32.7 percent of the district's population is concentrated in the district town. Many former residents of Posof are scattered across Turkey due to war and displacement. The population is made up of Turks , some of whom come from Kyptschaks , Georgians , Lasen , Tatars and Lesgiern .
