The European route 16 (E 16) is a European trunk road that leads with interruptions from Northern Ireland , Scotland via Norway to Sweden . The road begins in Derry , leads via Glasgow , Edinburgh , Bergen Lærdal , through the longest road tunnel in the world (24.5 km), the Lærdal tunnel , via Filefjell , Fagernes , Hønefoss and ended in Sandvika outside Oslo until 2011 .

In 2011 the Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) decided to continue the road eastwards. In autumn 2012, the signage along Borlänge , Falun , Sandviken and Gävle was finally adjusted.

The E 16 is the most important link between Norway's two largest cities, Oslo and Bergen , as this section of the road is rarely closed due to snowstorms.
