Sandviken is a town in the Swedish province of Gävleborgs län and the historic province of Gästrikland . It is located about 20 kilometers west of Gävle on Lake Storsjön and is the capital of the municipality of the same name .

history

Sandviken was founded in 1862. The founder, Consul Göran Fredrik Göransson , built a steel mill on the northern, sandy bay of Storsjön. Four years earlier he was the first to succeed in using the Bessemer method on a large scale. The expansion of the steelworks also led to the growth of the place, which by 1900 already had 6,000 inhabitants. Sandviken became a minority town ( köping ) in 1927 and a town in 1943. In 1970, the Nya Bruket residential area planned by the post-modernist architect Ralph Erskine was built, today an attractive residential area together with the older Gamla Bruket residential area from the 1880s. The history of the city can be traced in the Bruksgården factory museum , which is located in the former workers' settlement.

economy

From the start, Sandviken was totally dependent on Sandvikens Jernverk's steel mill, Bolag , now Sandvik AB . Sandviken is still a distinct industrial town today. The tool manufacturer Sandvik Coromant ( machining , turning tools , drilling and milling tools , carbide indexable inserts, etc.) is the largest company of its kind in the world.

Sports

The local bandy team , Sandvikens AIK , has won the Swedish championship several times. The 2017 World Bandy Championship took place in the Göransson Arena, which was completed in 2009 . The soccer team, Sandvikens IF , has been in the top Swedish league 21 times, but is currently in a lower class. The associated sports field (Jernvallen) was the northernmost venue for soccer World Cup matches - some preliminary round matches were held here for the 1958 World Cup .
