Karl Emil Jönsson (born August 15, 1985 in Årsunda in the Swedish municipality of Sandviken ) is a Swedish cross-country skier .
Career
Emil Jönsson trains in Årsunda and lives with his partner, the Swedish cross-country skier Anna Haag , in Östersund . The sprint specialist starts for Årsunda IF . In 2003 he made his international debut when he finished fourth in an FIS sprint in Sveg . In February 2004 he was used after further good results in FIS and junior races for the first time in a World Cup sprint in Stockholm , where he finished 36th. In the following years he was mainly used in the junior division, where he mostly achieved top placements. At the national junior championships in Haernosand he won the sprint title in 2005, at the following junior world championships in Rovaniemi he was sprint seventh. At the beginning of the 2005/06 season he was used for some time in distance races, but quickly returned to the sprint due to a lack of success. In January 2006 he won his first FIS sprint in Åsarna . At the end of the season, finishing fourth at the national championships, he narrowly missed winning a medal.
In November 2006, Jönsson achieved sixth place after winning the qualification for the Kuusamo sprint and thus achieved his first top ten result in the World Cup. Since 2007 Jönsson started almost only in the World Cup and reached five more placements in the top ten by the end of the season, including a second place in the Stockholm sprint, where only Mikhail Devyatyarov could beat him. At the end of the 2006/07 season , the Swede finished third in the overall sprint world cup and 20th in the overall world cup. At his first Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo in 2007 , Jönsson finished sixth in the sprint. At the beginning of the 2007/08 season he reached fifth place in the sprint in Düsseldorf and with Marcus Hellner in third place his first podium finish in the team sprint. In the 2008-09 season Jönsson was in Vancouver the sprint and team sprint with Robin Bryntesson win and occupied in the sprint World Cup and the seventh place in the World Cup and 28th place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec in the 1.6 km sprint 13th place and in the 1.6 km classic team sprint with Mats Larsson the sixth place.
A season later he won the World Cups in Otepää and Canmore in the sprint. In the overall world cup he reached sixth place and won the overall sprint world cup. From the 2009/10 season he also started in the Distance World Cup and finished in 30th place twice and 38th once and was 61st place in the overall World Cup. At his first Winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010 , he finished seventh in the 1.5 km sprint. In the 2010/11 season he won the sprint in Düsseldorf, Davos and Drammen . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo he was third in the sprint behind Marcus Hellner and Petter Northug .
In the 2011/12 season started Jönsson with the third place in the sprint in Davos. After finishing 41st overall in the 2011/2012 Tour de Ski , he won the silver medal in the sprint at the 2012 Swedish Championships in Östersund , having previously won the qualification. In March he won another World Cup in Lahti. He also got off to a successful start in the 2012/13 season . After some good finishes in the top 10, he won the sprint races in Quebec and Canmore.
At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme , after finishing fourth in the sprint, he won the silver medal in the team sprint. At the World Cup in Lahti, he was able to secure another victory in the sprint.
He started the 2013/14 season mixed and went in the meantime for a few races in the Scandinavian Cup. At the Swedish Championships in Umeå he won bronze over 15 km. At the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi , Jönsson won the bronze medal in the freestyle sprint and in the team sprint together with Teodor Peterson .
In the 2016/17 season he finished 42nd in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer and 18th in the World Cup final in Québec . At the beginning of February 2017 he became Swedish champion over 15 km classic. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , he came in 16th place over 15 km classic and eighth place together with Teodor Peterson in the team sprint. In January 2018 he finished second in the team sprint together with Teodor Peterson in Dresden .
