The 2008/09 Cross-Country World Cup was a series of competitions organized by the FIS that began on November 22nd, 2008 in Gällivare and ended on March 22nd, 2009 in Falun . The highlight of the season was the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 from February 19 to March 1, 2009 in Liberec .
In addition to the World Championship, the Tour de Ski was also held for the third time , a stage race for which 400 World Cup points were awarded in the event of victory instead of the usual 100 points. In addition, the World Cup final took place for the second time , also a stage race, the winner of which received 200 points.
The winners Dario Cologna (Switzerland) and Justyna Kowalczyk (Poland) were each the first in their country; not even a World Cup had taken place in Poland before. In the men's category, Pietro Piller Cottrer from Italy and the Norwegian Ola Vigen Hattestad secured the distance and sprint World Cup, respectively, while in the women's category it was Kowalczyk and the Slovenian Petra Majdič . In the Nations Cup, Norway continued to dominate, followed by Finland and Italy, but runners from countries that were previously weaker in long-term skiing, such as Switzerland, Poland and Slovenia, were also at the top.
Changes

The World Cup final introduced last season at the end of the season has been extended by one stage to four stages. In contrast to last season, as with the Tour de Ski , World Cup points were also awarded for each stage in addition to the overall ranking. However, only half of the normal World Cup points were awarded for the individual stages. The winner of a stage thus received 50 World Cup points. The points were only awarded to athletes who successfully completed all stages. The Tour de Ski has been expanded to include a new team classification. For the Tour Team Cup, the two best men and the two best women per competition were rated. The times were added up. The team with the lowest total time won the Tour Team Cup.
