doping

After the two Estonian athletes Karel Tammjärv and Andreas Veerpalu, among others , were arrested on suspicion of blood doping during Operation Aderlass at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 and had admitted the use of blood doping, Kärp, who is in the private training community together with Tammjärv and Veerpalu, also confessed Team Haanja trained outside the Estonian national team, on March 4, 2019 in an interview with the Estonian newspaper Õhtuleht the use of blood doping at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti and at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang .

Like Tammjärv, Kärp stated that contact with the German sports doctor Mark Schmidt was made through the former Estonian head coach Mati Alaver. Both athletes emphasized, however, that Alaver hadn't put any pressure on them, it was their free decision to use Schmidt's services. As reasons, he cited on the one hand his own desire to improve his performance and achieve top ten results and thus also repay his family something for the deprivation, as well as the strong pressure from the Estonian media, which after the resignation of Kristina Šmigun Vähi , Andrus Veerpalu and Jaak Mae often talked about a useless generation that just wasted money.

Kärp stated that the blood tests were uncomfortable and that the fear of the health risks had put him under great strain. According to his own information, blood was taken from him again in the spring of 2018 in Germany, but he did not use it in the 2018/19 season, and decided to end the season early in August due to persistent health problems. Kärp only took part in smaller FIS races and did not take part in the Estonian championship either.

After his public confession, Kärp announced an intensive collaboration with the Estonian anti-doping agency. Therefore, his doping ban was reduced to 2 years and 6 months. From September 6, 2021 he could take part in competitions again.
