Andreas Veerpalu (born May 24, 1994 in Otepää ) is an Estonian cross-country skier .

Career

Veerpalu, who competes for the Spordiklubi Sparta, appeared internationally for the first time at the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2011 in Liberec . His best placement was 14th in the sprint. In the following year he took 15th place in the sprint at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck and eighth place over 10 km classic and mixed relay. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2013 in Liberec, he achieved 61st place in the skiathlon , 37th place in the sprint and 11th place in the relay. In December 2013 he started in Vuokatti for the first time in the Scandinavian Cup and finished 76th in the sprint. His best placings at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2014 in Val di Fiemme were 35th place in the skiathlon and 15th place in the relay. The following year he came at the U23 World Championships in Almaty on 44th place over 15 km freestyle and 36th place in both skiathlon and sprint. He ran his first World Cup race in January 2015 in Otepää , which he finished in 67th place in the sprint. At the U23 World Championships in 2016 in Râşnov , he achieved 56th place over 15 km freestyle and 15 km classic. In January 2017, at the U23 World Championships in Soldier Hollow, he finished 27th in 15 km freestyle, 24th in sprint and 23rd in skiathlon. At the beginning of March 2017 he ran at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti to 51st place in the mass start race over 50 km and 36th place over 15 km classic. In January 2018 he became Estonian champion in skiathlon and over 15 km freestyle in Haanja and achieved his best position in the individual World Cup with 32nd place in Planica . His best results at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang were 38th place in the 50 km mass start race and 12th place in the relay. At the beginning of February 2019 he became Estonian champion over 15 km in Otepää.

Veerpalu's father is the former cross-country skier Andrus Veerpalu . His sister Anette is also active as a cross-country skier.

doping

After extensive raids by the Austrian Federal Criminal Police Office and the Munich Public Prosecutor's Office on suspicion of blood doping , the two Estonian athletes Karel Tammjärv and Veerpalu were arrested during the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019 . After his admission, Veerpalu was released from custody.
