Karel Tammjärv (born May 25, 1989 in Tartu ) is an Estonian cross-country skier .

life and career

Tammjärv made his first international appearance in 2007 at the Scandinavian Cup in Jõulumäe , where he finished 45th over 10 kilometers in a classic way. At the European Olympic Winter Youth Festival 2007 in Jaca , he reached 23rd place over 7.5 kilometers classic and 30th place over 10 kilometers freestyle. In 2008 he took part in the Junior World Championship in Mals . There he missed the finals in the sprint competition as 38th and came in 41st place over 10 kilometers classic. Over 20 kilometers freestyle (mass start) he was 52nd and finished eleventh with the Estonian relay. The following year he was able to increase his results significantly in Le Praz-de-Lys-Sommand . In the pursuit competition he fought for eleventh place and was 15th over 15 kilometers freestyle. Also in the sprint competition he reached the quarterfinals and was 26. With the Estonian team, he was sixth. Also in the Scandinavian Cup he managed to get into the points several times. His best result of the season was eighth in the 10 kilometer freestyle in Ulricehamn . At the Universiade in Harbin , his best result was 22nd place in the sprint competition. These good season results enabled him to make his first appearance in the cross-country world cup . At the World Cup in Lahti he was eliminated as the 58th in the qualification of the sprint competition and was 82nd over 15 kilometers freestyle. Also in the 2009/10 season Tammjärv started several times in the World Cup, but could only occupy places in the back field. At the FIS race in Albu he fought for fourth place behind Johan Olsson , Andrus Veerpalu and Jaak Mae . At the end of January 2010 he started at the U23 World Championship in Hinterzarten , where he finished 16th in the sprint competition. He then caused a surprise in the classic 15-kilometer competition, where he was able to achieve fifth place. This result prompted the Estonian Ski Association to nominate Karel Tammjärv for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver . There he finished 67th over 15 kilometers of freestyle. In the pursuit competition he was 46. In the 2010/11 season he got his first World Cup points with 22nd place in the sprint in Otepää . This is also his best individual placement in the World Cup so far. In February 2011 he won his first classic Scandinavian Cup victory over 15 km in Jõulumäe . His best placings at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo were 26th place over 15 km classic and tenth place with the relay. In November 2011 he came in 48th place at the Nordic Opening . In the 2012/13 season he finished 27th at the Nordic Opening and 63rd place at the Tour de Ski 2012/13 . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , he achieved 57th place in the skiathlon, 39th place in the 50 km mass start race and 15th place with the relay. In the following season he came 72nd at the Nordic Opening and 44th at the Tour de Ski 2013/14 . At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he finished 49th in the 50 km mass start race, 45th place over 15 km classic and tenth place with the relay. He finished the Tour de Ski 2015 in 46th place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2015 in Falun , he reached 43rd place in the skiathlon and 16th place in the relay. In February 2017 he won 58th place in sprint and 36th place in skiathlon at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti . He finished the Tour de Ski 2017/18 in 24th place. His best results at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang were 22nd place in the 15 km freestyle and 12th place with the relay.

doping

After extensive raids by the Austrian Federal Criminal Police Office on the basis of investigations by the Munich Public Prosecutor's Office on suspicion of blood doping , the two Estonian athletes Tammjärv and Andreas Veerpalu were arrested during the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019 . Tammjärv confessed to having doped since the 2017 World Cup.
