Tour de Ski

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tour de Ski [ ˌtuʀdəˈski ] is a cross-country skiing competition over several days and is based on the same concept as the stage races in road cycling . The event is part of the cross-country skiing world cup and takes place from the end of December to the beginning of January. The competition was held for the first time in the 2006/07 season . The competition includes races in both classical and free technology .

The Tour de Ski was conceived by the Swiss Jürg Capol and the former Norwegian cross-country skier Vegard Ulvang following the Tour de France 2004.

Regulations 2006/07

The winners of the tour will receive 400 points for the overall World Cup. The participants placed after this also receive four times the number of points compared to an individual race. No World Cup points are awarded in the individual stages. The running times are added up for the overall classification. There is also an overall sprint ranking.

In addition, there are bonus seconds for the best in each race, depending on the type of race. The winner of a sprint is credited 50 seconds, the second 40 seconds and the third 30 seconds. Bonus seconds are awarded up to the 30th rank. In longer races, such as the skiathlon , there are intermediate sprints in which the first three receive time bonuses (15, 10 and 5 seconds).

The leader in the overall standings wears a gold jersey, the front runner in the overall sprint standings a silver one.

Prize money totaling 1 million Swiss francs is awarded.

Changes in the regulations for the Tour de Ski 2007/08

Since the 2007/08 Tour de Ski there have been more bonus seconds for the best placed in the sprint. The winner now receives 60 bonus seconds, the second 56 and the third 52 seconds.

Another new feature is that there are now World Cup points for winning a single stage . Here the first receives 50 points, the second 40 points, the third 30 points, ..., the fifteenth finally 8 points. However, these points are only awarded if you cross the finish line of the last Tour de Ski race, i.e. if you complete the tour completely.

Only since the second tour in 2007/08 has there been a time limit : For women, the winning time may be exceeded by a maximum of 18%, for men by a maximum of 15%. However, the time limit can be extended by the jury in extreme weather conditions.

In addition, the Tour Team Cup, which the best team in the Tour de Ski wins, will be run for the first time. For this purpose, the times of the two best men and women of each nation are added up in each race. The nation that has the fastest time as a result receives the Tour Team Cup.
