Yevgeni Below won the 10 km classic and silver medal with the Russian relay at the 2010 Junior World Ski Championships in Hinterzarten . He also achieved top ten placements in the sprint competition and in the pursuit competition. In the Eastern Europe Cup he achieved two victories and at the end of the season finished second in the overall standings. In the 2010/11 season he started in the cross-country skiing world cup for the first time . At the Nordic Opening he impressed as eleventh overall. In Davos he also took eleventh place over 15 kilometers. As a starting runner, he finished second with the Russian relay in Gällivare and La Clusaz . At the U23 World Championship in Otepää , Estonia , he won silver in the 30 km pursuit race and gold in the 10 km freestyle. In February 2011 he won his first World Cup victory with the relay in Rybinsk . At the subsequent World Championships in Oslo , he finished 37th over 15 km classic and sprint. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2012 in Erzurum , he won silver in the skiathlon and in the sprint and gold over 15 km classic. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he reached third place with the relay in Gällivare. This was followed by two fourth places in races in La Clusaz and Canmore that season . At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2013 in Liberec , he won bronze in the sprint and silver in the 15 km freestyle and in the skiathlon. A month later he finished eleventh in the skiathlon at the 2013 Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme . With the relay he took bronze. He finished the season in 16th place in the overall ranking and 12th in the distance ranking. At the end of March 2013 he became the Russian champion in the 15 km freestyle. At the beginning of the following season, he mostly finished in midfield. In January 2014, in Szklarska Poręba , he achieved second place in the 15 km mass start race, his best result so far in an individual World Cup race. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he achieved 25th place over 15 km classic and 18th place in skiathlon. In the 2014/15 season he came nine times in the points with 10 participations in World Cup races. He finished the Tour de Ski 2015 in second place overall. He took second place over 10 km classic in Toblach . At the World Cup race in Rybinsk, he took second place over 15 km freestyle. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2015 in Falun , he came tenth in the 15 km freestyle, eighth place in the skiathlon and fourth place with the relay. In April 2015 he was third in the Ugra Skimarathon . He finished the season in fifth place in the overall World Cup and third in the distance ranking. After finishing 34th at the Nordic Opening in Ruka at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, he finished 11th at the 2016 Tour de Ski . At the following World Cup in Nové Město he was second with the relay. In March 2016, he finished 21st in the Ski Tour Canada . He came in second place over 15 km freestyle in Canmore . He finished the season in 18th place in the overall World Cup and 14th place in the Distance World Cup.
In the 2018/19 season Below won over 15 km freestyle in Davos and in Ulricehamn with the relay and took second place with the relay in Beitostølen . He achieved 26th place in the overall World Cup and 14th place in the Distance World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019 in Seefeld in Tyrol , he came 25th in the 50 km mass start race and 17th in the skiathlon . The following season he won the relay in Lillehammer and came 12th on the 2020 ski tour.
Doping allegations
In November 2017, Below was banned for life by the Oswald Commission of the International Olympic Committee based on the findings of the McLaren Report . His attorney then appealed. In February 2018, the International Sports Court lifted the ban due to insufficient evidence. Nevertheless, he was not allowed to take part in the 2018 Winter Games.
