Ruka

Ruka [ ˈrukɑ ] is a winter sports center in northern Finland . It is located on the 493 meter high Fjell Rukatunturi ( Ruka for short ) in the Kuusamo area . Winter sports are possible on the 28 slopes of Ruka until the beginning of May.

Ruka is the starting point for many hikes in the picturesque landscape of Northern Finland. It is a starting point for the bear circuit ( Karhunkierros ).

Sports

Ruka is the venue for several international winter sports competitions . On the mountain there is a ski sports stadium with the Rukatunturi ski jump ( HS 142) and a smaller K64 ski jump as well as illuminated cross-country ski trails and a biathlon facility. Since 2002, the World Cup kick-off in cross-country skiing and Nordic combined and a world cup in ski jumping at the Ruka Nordic Opening at the end of November at a joint event in Kuusamo. In 2006, 16,000 spectators followed the competitions. In 2005 the Freestyle Skiing World Championship took place in Ruka .
