The Rukatunturi-Schanze is a ski jumping hill on Fjell Rukatunturi in Kuusamo, Finland .
From 2002 to 2011, the so-called Nordic Opening , the season opener for the FIS World Cup of Nordic skiing disciplines, took place here every year. In 2012, the season opener in ski jumping and Nordic combined was carried out a week before the competitions in Kuusamo in Lillehammer , Norway, contrary to the long-term practice . In addition, competitions of the Continental Cup and the World Cup in Nordic Combined take place regularly on the hill .
history
After its completion in 1964, the ski jump was the largest large hill in the world and remained so until the construction of the new Mühlenkopfschanze in Willingen in 2003. In the 1990s the facility was equipped with floodlights so that night jumping is also possible. In addition, the ski jump has a snow-making system and a ceramic track and is therefore the largest ski jump in the world for year-round use.
Name of the hill
The name of the hill regularly causes a bit of confusion, as it is referred to as both the Ruka hill and the Rukatunturi hill. On the official data sheet of the FIS the hill is called Rukatunturi .
