Arttu Ville Eemeli Lappi (born May 11, 1984 in Kuopio ) is a former Finnish ski jumper . He started for the club in his hometown, the Puijon Hiihtoseura . In addition to ski jumping, he studied law at the Lapland University in Rovaniemi.
Career
The Finn started ski jumping in March 1995 at the age of ten. From 1997 to 2000 he was part of the Hopeasompa team of the Finnish Ski Association, a special support group for young ski jumping talents between the ages of 12 and 16 years.
He made his debut in the Continental Cup on November 17, 2001 in Kuusamo , where he immediately scored points with a 27th place. In the same season he also won his first Continental Cup victory when he won the competition on the large hill on Iron Mountain in the US on February 24, 2002. A month earlier he had won the team junior world championship title at the competitions in Schonach in the Black Forest together with Janne Happonen , Harri Olli and Akseli Kokkonen , while he was only 44th in the individual.
The Finn also made his World Cup debut in Lahti in the 2001/2002 season . On his debut, he immediately reached eighth place in the top ten. With further good results in the rest of the season, he recommended himself for a starting place in the World Cup team of the 2002/2003 season , in which he also started at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2003 in Val di Fiemme , Italy , and with his teammates Janne Ahonen , Matti Hautamäki and Tami Kiuru became team world champion. In the individual competitions he was sixth on the normal and twelfth on the large hill.
In the following season he lost his place in the A-Team after poor performance and started again in the Continental Cup until a broken right ankle in 2005 put him completely out of action. In November 2005 he was then used again in the World Cup via the national group in Kuusamo , but jumped the season mostly in the Continental Cup. It was not until the 2006/2007 season that he made the jump back to the World Cup team and unexpectedly won the one-round competition on November 24, 2006 in Kuusamo due to snowfall. Overall, this season was his most successful so far with a sixth place overall in the Four Hills Tournament and a 15th place in the overall World Cup. In addition, he set his personal best distance in ski flying in Vikersund, Norway, with 204 meters. At the 2007 World Championships , he narrowly missed a medal with the Finnish team in fourth. In the individual competitions he was eleventh on the large hill and 22nd on the normal hill.
Also in the 2007/2008 season Lappi was used in the World Cup team, but no longer regularly. For the 2008/2009 season he was removed from the World Cup team again because of poor performance.
In February 2009 the Finn suffered another serious injury. In a failed landing while training in Rovaniemi, he suffered a ligament injury in his right knee. In March he underwent an operation at Joensuu Hospital and was given a five-month break from ski jumping. He ended his career in April 2010. He was then elected to the Board of Directors for Growth and Development in Finland. He also works as a lawyer in Helsinki.
