He made his international debut on December 30, 1982 at the Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf ; he immediately reached 14th place. In the following five years, Ylipulli was among the world's best and often reached the top ranks, especially on ski flying hills. At the Junior World Championships in 1983 in Kuopio he won the bronze medal, at the Ski Flying World Championships in 1986 in Bad Mitterndorf , he reached fifth place.
