Stephan Hocke (born October 20, 1983 in Suhl ) is a former German ski jumper . His greatest achievement is winning the gold medal in the team competition at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City .

Career

Hocke began practicing Nordic combined in 1992 , where his father was the trainer of a DSV team and switched to special jumping at the age of 14. In the 1997/98 season he celebrated his first success by winning the German Junior Championship. At the 2001 Summer Grand Prix he competed in an international competition for the first time. After he was able to take 20th place straight away, he also took part in the subsequent Grand Prix competitions in Japan , where he jumped into the top ten for the first time with a ninth place in Sapporo .

At the end of November 2001 in Kuopio , Finland , the season opener of the Ski Jumping World Cup 2001/02 he was able to occupy places among the top ten with a seventh and a fifth place. At the following World Cup in Titisee-Neustadt , he was third to take his first podium. A week later, on December 15, 2001, he celebrated his only World Cup victory at the World Cup competition on the Gross-Titlis-Schanze in Engelberg . In the following Four Hills Tournament , he brought stable performances and finished tenth in the tour evaluation. At the subsequent World Cup in Willingen , he was able to secure another podium place in the team competition with the team with third place.

Because of his achievements, Hocke was nominated for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . After he was not used in the competition on the normal hill, he was able to take twelfth place in the individual competition on the large hill. At the final team competition on the large hill, he won the gold medal together with Sven Hannawald , Martin Schmitt and Michael Uhrmann .

The rest of the World Cup season was mixed for Hocke: Although he finished third with the team in Lahti , he was no longer able to achieve top positions in the individual competitions. His good results from the start of the season were sufficient for ninth place in the overall World Cup ranking.

In the following years, Hocke kept switching between the World Cup, where he rarely achieved top results, and the second-rate Continental Cup .

At the end of August 2003 he had a serious fall during a training jump from Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck and suffered a fracture of the thoracic vertebra and several hairline cracks . Nevertheless, he was able to participate in the World Cup again in November 2003.

In the winter of 2004/05 he initially showed similar mixed performances as in previous years, but was able to improve over time and achieved on February 11, 2005 in Pragelato with fifth place his best result for over two years. On February 12, 2005 he was used in the team competition and was able to celebrate a third place with the team. Because of this good performance, he was appointed to the German squad for the Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf. There, however, he could not prevail in the team-internal elimination and only took part in the official training rounds as a substitute. At the end of the season in ski flying in Planica , Slovenia , he was able to set up his personal best of 208.5 m.

In mid-November 2006 he fell during a training course in Ramsau am Dachstein and broke his left collarbone . On the last weekend in December he was able to get back into the Continental Cup. In the team competition on February 11, 2007 in Willingen, he took another third place. He then took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo. On the large hill, he narrowly missed the second round, and on the normal hill, he finished 27th. In the team competition, the German squat team had no chance due to the previous injury to Michael Uhrmann and ended up in eighth place.

Immediately before the Four Hills Tournament 2012/13, Stephan Hocke announced that he would end his career immediately. The reason is the material battle in ski jumping and poor training conditions in his home in Thuringia.

Hocke is a graduate of the Oberhof sports high school and joined the Bundeswehr sports promotion group in summer 2003 . He later studied sports science at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena .
