Severin Freund (born May 11, 1988 in Freyung ) is a German ski jumper who competes for the WSV-DJK Rastbüchl . His greatest successes are winning the overall World Cup in the 2014/15 season , the world champion title in the individual competition on the large hill at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun and the title in the individual competition at the 2014 Ski Flying World Championships in Harrachov . He was also Olympic champion with the German team at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi . Freund currently lives in Munich . He has been a member of the customs ski team since 2015 .

Career

Youth and career start (1993 to 2011)

In 1993 Freund started with Nordic combined and switched to special jumping in 1995. Since 2002 he has competed in the Alpine Cup and international junior competitions. In February 2003 he started in Sollefteå for the first time at the Junior World Championship and finished 30th in the individual and 11th place with the team. In the 2004/05 season he started in the Continental Cup (COC) for the first time , but where he did not prevail and always missed the second round. In addition, he continued to compete in FIS jumping. At the 2005 World Junior Championship held in Rovaniemi , he finished 26th (individual) and 11th (team). In January 2006 he reached the points for the first time at a COC in Titisee-Neustadt . In 2006 he also celebrated several successes in the national junior division. He was German youth champion both individually and with the team, and he also won the overall ranking of the German Cup. At the Junior World Championships held this year in Kranj , he finished 13th in the individual. In the summer of 2006 he took part in several COC summer competitions, but only reached the second round in one. After he had not started in the winter of 2006/07, he first came second in the German youth championship in summer 2007, shortly afterwards he won the silver medal in the team competition at the 2007 German championships in Winterberg .

Although he did not convince at the Continental Cups that took place in the summer of 2007, he improved himself in the winter and achieved his best result to date in Rovaniemi on December 13, 2007, after he had already performed stable in midfield on the two previous days. He was then appointed to the World Cup team and started in Engelberg for the first time on December 22nd, 2007 in a first-class international competition. At the following Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf , he was 30th to get his first World Cup point. A week later, on January 6th, 2008, he even finished 20th in the last jump of the tour in Bischofshofen , which was influenced by the wind. After taking part in a few COC competitions again, he became Junior World Champion 2008 in the team competition in Zakopane , but only finished 31st in the individual. Until the end of winter he still took part in a few Continental Cups. In summer 2008 he started successfully in the mat jumping of the Continental Cup. He celebrated his first victory on September 13, 2008 in Lillehammer , and finished on the podium in three more competitions. In the overall Continental Cup ranking in summer 2008, he finished third.

Successful years as the best German ski jumper (2011 to 2016)

Freund achieved his first World Cup victory on January 15, 2011 in Sapporo , Japan, ahead of the Austrian Thomas Morgenstern and the Polish Adam Małysz . This was also the first German World Cup victory in almost four years and was hailed as a “sensation” in the media. The following day, after a lead in the first round, he took second place behind Andreas Kofler . At the World Cup show jumping in Zakopane on January 21, 2011 he reached another podium with third place. On January 30th, he recorded his second World Cup victory in Willingen, Hesse. It was also the first success of a German ski jumper on the Mühlenkopfschanze since Sven Hannawald's victory in 2003.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo , Freund took 7th place in the individual on the normal hill. In the team competition he won bronze with Martin Schmitt , Michael Uhrmann and Michael Neumayer behind Austria and Norway. At the 2011 German Championships in Hinterzarten, he won the team title with the Bavarian team, as well as the individual title for the first time.

Freund am Holmenkollen 2012

In April 2012, Freund suffered a herniated disc after suffering from persistent back problems. He then had to undergo an operation and take a compulsory break of several months. After he had already finished second on his comeback on September 30, 2012 in Hinzenbach, Austria , he won the first Summer Grand Prix victory of his career three days later at the Grand Prix Final in Klingenthal . In Klingenthal, he became German individual champion at the German Championships in 2012. After winning the World Cup opener on November 24, 2012 in Lillehammer , Norway , he won his first World Cup team competition six days later in the team competition in Kuusamo, Finland, with the German team.

When a mixed team competition was held for the first time at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme in 2013 , he won the bronze medal with the German team at the side of Carina Vogt , Ulrike Gräßler and Richard Freitag behind Japan and Austria. Previously, he just missed a medal in jumping from the normal hill in fourth. With his teammates Andreas Wank , Michael Neumayer and Richard Freitag he won the silver medal behind Austria in the team competition on the large hill after the Norwegian team had been subsequently denied the silver medal for a miscalculation of the run-up. The lead over the now third-placed Poles was only 0.8 points.

Freund started successfully in the Ski Jumping World Cup 2013/14 , but then disappointed in the Four Hills Tournament. After that, with two second places at the Home World Cup in Willingen, he became one of the favorites for the Olympic Games in Sochi . There he missed a good placement on the normal hill after a fall in the first round. On the large hill, he reached fourth place, after having been third in the first round. Two days later, on February 17, 2014, Freund and his teammates Andreas Wank , Marinus Kraus and Andreas Wellinger won the Olympic team competition. For the victory in Sochi, he received the silver laurel leaf from Federal President Gauck on May 8, 2014.

Shortly afterwards he celebrated a World Cup victory in Falun with a considerable advantage of 15.9 points. At the ski flying world championship 2014 in Harrachov , the friend who was already in the lead after the first two rounds of the individual competition the day before became ski flying world champion on March 15, 2014 when the third and fourth rounds were canceled.

In the 2014/15 World Cup season , Severin Freund set a new German record in ski flying when he won on February 15, 2015 in Vikersund with a distance of 245 meters . On February 21, 2015, he won the silver medal on the normal hill at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun, just 0.4 points behind the Norwegian Rune Velta . On the following day, Freund won the world title in the mixed competition together with Carina Vogt , Richard Freitag and Katharina Althaus . On February 26, 2015, he secured the gold medal on the large hill with a 22.3 point lead over Gregor Schlierenzauer . The third German after Jens Weissflog and Martin Schmitt won Severin Freund on 22 March 2015 an exciting final - due to the higher number won individual events in the World Cup season 2014/15 - on points with Peter Prevc from Slovenia the overall World Cup .

Freund in Titisee-Neustadt 2016

During the 2015/16 World Cup season , Freund was able to achieve his best result so far in this competition with second place in the Four Hills Tournament . At the ski flying world championship in 2016 he won the silver medal with the German team and achieved 6th place in the individual competition when Peter Prevc won. At the end of the season he finished second in the overall World Cup behind Prevc.

Injuries and breaks (from 2016)

Following the 2015/16 season, Freund had to undergo an operation on his hip, which severely impaired his preparation for the new 2016/17 World Cup season . Nevertheless, he was able to jump on the podium again at the opening competition on November 25, 2016 in Kuusamo , with a second place between the Prevc brothers Domen and Peter . The next day he celebrated his first World Cup victory in just under eleven months and took the lead in the overall World Cup. After this successful start to the season, he did not achieve any more podium positions as a result of his hip surgery, but instead occupied more and more top 30 placements. At the end of December 2016, he led the German team for the Four Hills Tournament 2016/17 , but finished 20th in the opening competition in Oberstdorf and only 21st in the New Year's competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. After these two competitions, Freund had to end the tour prematurely due to a flu . Shortly before the planned return to the World Cup, which was planned for the jumping in Willingen on January 28 and 29, 2017, Freund suffered a cruciate ligament rupture during training. He had to undergo an operation and was canceled for the rest of the 2016/17 season and thus also for the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2017 . In May 2017, Freund was able to get back into training. In July 2017, Freund tore another cruciate ligament, which meant that he missed the entire 2017/18 season and the 2018 Winter Olympics .

After a long break from injury, he returned to ski jumping training in September 2018. His return to the World Cup followed on the second weekend of the 2018/19 season in Kuusamo . On November 24, 2018, he took 29th place there. A meniscus operation was necessary in February 2019, which is why Freund also missed the 2019 Nordic World Ski Championships . After back problems, he did not join the competitions in Râșnov in the 2019/20 season until the end of February 2020 .
