Percival Colin "Percy" Montgomery (born March 15, 1974 in Walvis Bay , South Africa ) is a former South African rugby union player . In the position of goalkeeper he played for the South African national rugby union team with which he became world champion in 2007 and the most successful player on points. With the end of the Tri Nations in 2008 , he announced his national team career end. However, he was still active for one more season for the Stormers . After retiring, he works as an assistant coach for the South African national team.

Percy Montgomery started his sporting career in 1996 with the Western Province in the Currie Cup and with the Stormers in the Super 12 . At the end of 2002 he moved to Wales to play for the Newport RFC and from 2003 for the Newport Gwent Dragons . In 2006 he returned to South Africa. Here he played as a goalkeeper for the Natal Sharks in the Currie Cup and for the Sharks in the Super 14 . After the 2007 World Cup, he moved to the French club USA Perpignan .

Percy Montgomery was a member of the South African national team from 1997 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2008. His first appearance for the "Springboks", the South African national team, he had in 1997 in the game against the English rugby union national team . In 2002 and 2003 he was not considered for the national team because of his stay outside South Africa. Percy Montgomery also holds the South African all-time record for international matches and points scored.

Especially during the early days of his career, Percy Montgomery caused a stir because of his changeable performances and especially because of his unsporting missteps. After an incident involving a linesman during a game against Swansea RFC in May 2003, he was suspended from the Welsh Rugby Union for 18 months. His constantly fluctuating playful consistency, combined with the ability to decide on the outcome of a game for the better or for the negative, is seen as one of his trademarks. The Australian television broadcaster Fox TV awards the "Percy" to the worst player in its program Inside Rugby every week as an allusion to the occasional momentous and often game-changing mistakes made by Percy Montgomery. Nevertheless, Percy Montgomery enjoys a lot of sympathy, especially in South Africa.

In 2008 he received the Order of Ikhamanga in silver.
