The Newport Gwent Dragons ( Wal . : Dreigiau Casnewydd Gwent ) are a professional rugby union team from the Welsh town of Newport . You play in the international Pro12 championship and in the Anglo-Welsh Cup, the Anglo-Welsh Cup . The home games are played in Rodney Parade .
history
Until the 2003/04 season, Welsh rugby was structured in a typical league pyramid, with nine professional clubs in the top division. The system was thus similar to the Guinness Premiership in England and the Top 14 in France. However, the Welsh market turned out to be too small for nine professional teams. Then the nine professional clubs began to combine to form regional teams. In the Newport region, these were the Newport RFC and the Ebbw Vale RFC . The amateur and junior teams continue to operate under the original names.
In their first season (2003/04), the Dragons achieved their best result in the Celtic League with third place. They have never been able to qualify for the quarter-finals in the European Heineken Cup . In 2007 they reached the semi-finals in the European Challenge Cup , but then lost to the French club ASM Clermont Auvergne . In both 2015 and 2016, Newport made it to the semi-finals again.
Regional division
Professional rugby in Wales is based on four franchises owned by the Welsh Rugby Union and covering a specific area. The Newport Gwent Dragons franchise covers the most southeastern part of Wales. The team may include all players who play for clubs in this area in their squad.
