history

The Newport RFC was founded in 1874 and played the first game between a Welsh and an English club in four years when they met Blackheath. In 1880 the club was one of the founders of the Welsh Rugby Union and provided the association's first chairman. Four of the club's players were on the Welsh squad when they played for their first international match against England in 1881 . Newport's John Bevan was the first Welsh captain in rugby history. Tom Baker-Jones, also a Newport player, scored the first attempt for the national team.

At the beginning of the 20th century, numerous national teams traveled to Newport. In 1912 South Africa presented the association with a head of a springbok , their heraldic animal. Newport thanked them with the first victory of a club team over the South Africans. In the 1950s, the club formed the first rugby team of 7 in Wales.

1957 Newport managed a victory over the Australian national team , followed by a win against New Zealand , so that the club has beaten all three greats of the southern hemisphere. In 1969 they were able to repeat their success with the "Springboks". In the 1990s, Newport struggled to continue the successful times. After the professionalization of the sport, the WRU decided in 2003 to form regional teams, which should consist of the existing clubs. This is how the Newport Gwent Dragons emerged , who have played in the Celtic League, now Pro12 , since then , with the Newport RFC playing in the Welsh Premier Division since the 1990s.

From the 2009/10 season the club will take part in the British and Irish Cup , a competition for second-rate clubs.
