The Llandovery Rugby Football Club is a rugby union -Verein who in the Welsh Premier Division plays. The home games are played at the Church Bank Playing Fields in Llandovery .

history

Even before 1878, the year the club was founded, there are reports of rugby matches in the region. Llandovery College then played sporadically against other selections from Carmarthenshire . On February 22, 1878, the club played its first ever game against Newport . In 1881 the national association Welsh Rugby Union was founded , Llandovery was one of the founding members. In the same year, the national team played their first international match. They lost high against England , with a Llandovery player replacing Wales.

Due to the First World War , rugby was not played between 1914 and 1919. After the end of the war, games continued with the returning players. Even during the Second World War , the club could not host any games. It was not until 1948 that he was able to put together a team again. The club was able to celebrate some minor successes, so in 1954 it won the Llanelli Region Cup . In 1956 they moved and played at Barlow's Field, where dressing rooms were later built. In the same year, the association rejoined the Welsh Federation after decades of refusing to be part of the association due to political and religious disputes.

In 1965 Llandovery joined the West Wales Rugby Union and was able to participate in higher leagues in the region. In 1974 the club acquired its own clubhouse. In the next few years it grew steadily and also improved in league operations. In the meantime, they also had their own exclusive space to host the league games. With the introduction of a nationwide league structure, Llandovery was placed in the fourth division and has since worked its way up to the premier division.

Since 2003, the club has provided players for the Scarlets , one of four Welsh teams in the multinational Magners League .
