Andy Powell (born August 23, 1981 in Brecon ) is a Welsh rugby union player . He plays as number eight for the Welsh national team and the London Wasps .

Career

Powell began his career at Newport RFC , which he left after introducing regional selections. He moved to France for AS Béziers , where he stayed, however, only for a short time. This was followed by a season with the Leicester Tigers , in which he only ran up once. After a season with the Scarlets , he moved to his current club.

Powell gained his first experience as a national player for the U21 team and the Reserve Wales A. He made his debut for the men's national team in autumn 2008 against South Africa and was immediately named player of the game. He also showed his strengths in the other November international games and is consequently also part of the Welsh squad for the Six Nations 2009 . In 2009 he also won the EDF Energy Cup with the Blues. In April 2009 he was nominated by Ian McGeechan for the tour of the British and Irish Lions to South Africa , but was not used.

On the 2010/11 season Powell moved from the Blues to the London Wasps .
