The Association Sportive de Béziers Hérault ( AS Béziers for short ) is a rugby union club from the French city of Béziers in the Hérault department . He plays in the second highest French league Pro D2 . The home games are played in the Stade de la Méditerranée . The club has won the French championship eleven times. The soccer department also had a certain importance in the past .
history
The club was founded in 1911 when the Sporting Club Biterrois and the Midi Athletic Club merged to form the Association Sportive Biterroise (ASB). After just a few years, rugby was by far the most important department. In 1919 Midi Sportif and Jeunesse Sportive Biterroise were also merged into the club. The first significant success story was reaching the cup final in 1950, but it was not until the 1960s that Béziers rose to become one of the leading teams in the country.
In 1960, Béziers reached the final of the French championship for the first time and won the championship title for the first time in 1961. Further finals followed in 1962 and 1964. In 1964, he also won the prestigious Challenge Yves du Manoir . In the 1970s, no team was nearly as strong as the ASB (six championship titles, two Challenge Yves du Manoir). The dominance of the ASB was so overwhelming that there was general talk of Grand Béziers .
The winning streak continued in the first half of the 1980s, with four more championship titles. After winning the eleventh championship in 1984, however, Béziers slipped into midfield and has never been able to build on the successes since. In 1994, Béziers was relegated to the second division, but managed to get promoted again the following year. The same happened again in 1999 and 2000. From 2005, Béziers played again in the second division. He then rose in 2009 by a further step in the amateur league Fédérale 1 , which is the absolute low point in the club's history. In 2011 AS Béziers became French amateur champions and rose again to the Pro D2. The club only ranked 15th in the 2011/12 season, but escaped relegation again because CS Bourgoin-Jallieu did not receive a professional license and was forcibly relegated.

Football department
The football department was created in October 1911, initially as an independent club called Stade Béziers Sport . In 1918, after a merger, it became the Stade Olympien Biterrois . After four more clubs joined in 1935, it was renamed Entente Sportive Biterroise . The club disbanded in 1939 and from then on the footballers formed a department of ASB (at that time still AS Biterroise ). The league team played in the Stade des Sauclières . From 1945 to 1969 she belonged continuously to the professional league operation, including one season ( 1957/58 ) in the top division . In 1990 the soccer department was dissolved. In 2007, Avenir Sportif Béziers was merged into a new club in the city that deliberately chose the same initials (ASB) as the Association Sportive.
League affiliation and achievements
The footballers had professional status in 1933/34, 1945–1969, 1970–1972 and 1973–1987. First class ( Division 1 , since 2002 Ligue 1 ) they only played in 1957/58 (18th place in the table), but beyond that 40 years in Division 2 . The only significant success was reaching the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France in 1962.
