As a youth during the Second World War , the goalkeeper initially played soccer near his birthplace before moving to AS Béziers in 1951 , where he also attracted national attention. A year later, AS Saint-Étienne signed him , and under their coach Jean Snella , who had a good hand in bringing players to the first division eleven, he quickly became a regular and was with his factual nature a support for the team in the following Years ago she was always placed in the top half of the table without achieving any major successes - until she surprisingly won the French championship title in 1957 . Abbes, whose strength lay mainly on the goal line and whose trademark was an everyday sweater, played all of the Verts ' point games , as the ASSE is called in France, this season .
In 1960 he was in his first cup final with Saint-Étienne , but conceded four goals against Monaco , but two years later it was his team that won the Coupe de France , and this time Claude Abbes had kept his box clean. The national player
Claude Abbes, who was part of the French squad at the 1954 World Cup but did not appear there, was in the goal of the Équipe Tricolore in nine international matches between October 1957 and December 1958 . France's greatest success at the world championships up to then also fell during this time, namely 3rd place in Sweden - and this time he not only sat on the bench, but played from the third preliminary round because the number 1 ( François Remetter ) in the first games Showed weaknesses and the actual number 2 ( Dominique Colonna ) had fallen out of favor with the member of the association's selection committee, Alex Thépot , himself a former national goalkeeper , because of "too clear words" on the eve of the game against the Scots . Despite this third place, the defense had conceded nine goals in four games with Abbes. Half a year after this success, his time with the Bleus ended .
Life after the active time
Claude Abbes had already completed a degree in electrical engineering during his professional time , and from 1962 he worked at the Tricastin nuclear plant near Pierrelatte on the Rhone . In the second half of the 1970s he was involved in setting up a research facility in Saint-Étienne and has since returned regularly to the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard , where he was often drawn as a pensioner.
