Biarritz Olympique (full name: Biarritz Olympique Pays Basque ; often abbreviated to BOPB ) is a multi-sport club from the French city of Biarritz . Handball , athletics , roller hockey , swimming , tennis and triathlon are all practiced . However, rugby union is by far the most important ; the team plays in the second highest French league Pro D2 and has been champion five times (most recently in 2006).

The home games of the rugby team are played in the Parc des Sports d'Aguiléra ; For important games in the Heineken Cup , Biarritz Olympique switches to the Estadio Anoeta in San Sebastián . The addition of the name Pays Basque indicates the location of Biarritz in the Basque Country ; fans wave Basque flags and sing traditional Basque songs.

history

The sports club “L'amicale des anciens de Jules-Ferry” was founded in 1898 and renamed “Biarritz Stade” four years later. In 1903, Biarritz Stade bought the area on which the rugby stadium is now from a clay pigeon shooting club. The first international game, against a club from Cardiff , took place in 1909. Through the merger with the "Biarritz SC" on April 26, 1913, the association Biarritz Olympique was finally formed.

In 1934 Biarritz Olympique reached the final of the French championship for the first time; however, the team lost to Aviron Bayonnais from the neighboring city of Bayonne . A year later, Biarritz reached the final again and won against USA Perpignan . In 1938 Biarritz lost the final against Perpignan, but in 1939 the successful revenge followed with winning the second championship title.

During the next 60 years or so Biarritz was always represented in the top division, but could never win a major title. 1992 Biarritz again reached the championship finals, but was subject to the RC Toulon . In 1998, the club changed its name to the form it is used today in order to emphasize its ties to the Basque Country. In the new millennium, Biarritz continued the successes of the 1930s. The club won the championship in 2002, 2005 and 2006. In the Heineken Cup , Biarritz advanced to the finals in 2006 and 2010, but just lost it.

In 2014 Biarritz was relegated to the second highest division Pro D2 .
