In his last season at the club, Kowarz did not play any more, 1. FC Nürnberg was relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, Köpke moved to Eintracht in Frankfurt. Kowarz was again without a club before he continued as a player-coach in the amateur area at FV Steinau in Hesse in 1995 . With the FV Steinau he was promoted three times to the Oberliga Hessen. From 1998 Kurt Kowarz was goalkeeping coach at Arminia Bielefeld , and already there the paths crossed with Zdenko Miletić , with whom he later trained again at FC Augsburg . Then Kowarz worked in a talent development program of the DFB.

Kurt Kowarz had been working as a coaching assistant at FC Augsburg since the 2002/03 season , with whom he achieved the long-awaited promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2006.
