The Hessenliga (up to 2008 Oberliga Hessen ) is one of the fourteen German leagues that make up the fifth highest division in the league system in Germany .

It is organized by the Hessian Football Association . The next higher league is the regional league .

The Hessenliga has 17 starting places. The champion of the Hessenliga is promoted to the Regionalliga Südwest . The runner-up will play promotion games against the second-placed teams in the upper leagues of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate / Saar . The last three placed at the end of the season are relegated to the Hessian association leagues. The champions of these three leagues are promoted to the Hessenliga.

history

After the Second World War , football was resumed in Hesse in the 1945/46 season. Below the new Oberliga Süd , which included Hessen Eintracht Frankfurt , Kickers Offenbach and FSV Frankfurt , four leagues were initially created. In addition to the regional league with a western and an eastern relay, a Kurhessen league and a main league were set up. For the following season 1946/47 the league structure was unified and a Landesliga Hessen formed, which was divided into five groups in the 1946/47 season.

A single-track national league was formed from the best teams from these five groups for the 1947/48 season. Borussia Fulda , SV Darmstadt 98 , Eintracht Wetzlar , KSV Hessen Kassel , 1. Rödelheimer FC , Germania Bieber , SG Arheilgen , VfL Kassel , VfB 06 Großauheim , CSC 03 Kassel , SG Kassel-Nord , FV Horas , VfB belonged to this first all- Hessen league Friedberg and TuS Löhnberg . The first championship won the Rödelheimer FC. The Landesliga Hessen represented the second highest level in the German league system in Hessen from 1945 to 1950 .

From the 1950/51 season onwards, after the introduction of the 2nd League South , the 1st Amateur League Hessen was only the third highest division in Germany. The next reform took place in 1965. The 1st amateur league Hessen was renamed the Hessenliga for the first time and the group leagues were introduced as a new "substructure" instead of the 2nd amateur league. From 1978 the Hessenliga was called Oberliga Hessen , the level below it was called the Landesliga . Until the third-class regional league was founded in 1994, the Hessian league formed the third level of the league system. Then it was located on the fourth level until the introduction of the 3rd division in 2008, since then it has been in fifth class.

Until the 2004/05 season, the league was called FFH -Oberliga Hessen for two years . In the 2005/06 season the league was named Oddset -Oberliga Hessen . In the following two years they returned to the name Oberliga Hessen , before it was renamed Hessenliga in 2008. The league has been called Lotto Hessenliga since the 2015/16 season .
