The VfB Friedberg (full name: Association for Movement Games Friedberg eV ) is a sports club from Friedberg in Hesse . In the 1930s, the club's first soccer team played for six years in the then first-class Gauliga Hessen . The first water polo team plays in the 2nd Bundesliga South .

history

VfB Friedberg was created on January 1, 1918 through the merger of FV Grün-Weiß 1904 Friedberg and FC Merkur 1905 Friedberg . The soccer team was one of the founding members of the Gauliga Hessen in 1933, although it had not qualified for it in terms of sport. The association was accepted for geographical reasons. In terms of sport, the first season was successful: with just one home defeat, VfB was runner-up behind Borussia Fulda .

In the following years the Friedberger established themselves in the middle of the table. After the 1938/39 season , the club withdrew its team from the Gauliga, as it was no longer able to provide a competitive team for personnel reasons. After the Second World War , VfB rose to the Hesse amateur league in 1949 . After a runner-up in 1957, the team became Hessen champions a year later and then won the southern German amateur championship. In the final round of the German Amateur Championship , VfB was eliminated in the first round against Rapide Wedding .

In the promotion round to the 2nd Oberliga Süd , the Friedberger were able to win all four games and secure promotion, but after a year they were relegated back to the amateur league. In 1963, VfB was relegated from the amateur league and said goodbye to higher-class football.
