The VfB 06 Großauheim is a football club in today Hanauer district Großauheim . The club, founded in 1906, had its heyday in the 1930s and 1940s, when the first soccer team played for a long time in the top Hessian leagues. In the last few decades, VfB 06 was last represented in a higher class ( Landesliga Hessen Süd ) between 1980 and 1984 , but mostly in the divisions of the Frankfurt soccer region.

history

The club was founded on January 10, 1906 under the name 1. Großauheimer Football Club 1906 in the inn "Zum alten Löwen" (today's Old Town Hall). The first members were mostly young merchants, the first game venue was a community-owned meadow across from Lindenau. After this first club was founded, several other football clubs emerged in Großauheim, which finally merged in 1910 to form the Großauheim Football Association in 1910 , not least because of the relatively low interest in the still young sport at the time . In 1912 there was the first local derby, 1. FC 06 won the game 1-0. Nationally, both clubs were not very successful in the early years. When the team of the football association entered the top division, the Nordmain district league, for the first time in the first association season after the First World War, in 1919/20, they occupied despite strong competitors such as Hanau 93 , FSV Frankfurt and the Eintracht predecessor Frankfurter FV after the preliminary round surprisingly second place after the preliminary round, but was immediately relegated at the end of the season.

On May 1, 1921, the two local football clubs merged to form the Association for Movement Games (VfB) and were now the largest club in the community with around 500 members. The first joint season on the sports field on the Lindenau was successfully completed a year later, so that VfB Großauheim rose to the top division in 1922. The success was not long-lasting, however, because a year later you had to start again in the second class. Not least because of the sporting failure, the former FC 06 split off again in 1924 . In 1929/30 both clubs played in a joint league for the first time, the second-rate Mittelmain district league, but none of the local rivals managed to make the leap to the top division until 1933, although VfB at least made it to the top division in 1931 and 1933. After the "seizure of power" by the National Socialists, on February 10, 1934, the new rulers were forced to merge the Großauheim soccer clubs in VfB 06 Großauheim . In addition to soccer, this club also did athletics and off-road sports.

After the new merger, the sporting success gradually returned, and led by the exceptional player Helmut Fiedler, the team achieved promotion to the Gauliga Hessen , which at that time was the highest division of the North and Middle, with the championship in the district class of 1936/37 - and Osthessen included. In contrast to the previous guest appearances in the highest league, the Großauheimers were quite successful here. The high point of these years was reached in the 1939/40 season, when VfB 06 finished second in the southern relay of the Hessian division class, tied with Hanau 93. Despite difficult circumstances, the club kept the game going during the Second World War and stayed at the highest level until 1942, in autumn 1944 the championship rounds were finally stopped due to the war.

Shortly after the end of the war, football was played again in Großauheim, and the first post-war game against Hanau 93 was won 2-1. On Christmas Day 1945, the members decided to re-establish the club under the old name VfB 06 Großauheim , which had become necessary after all the clubs had been formally dissolved by the Allies. At the beginning of 1946, the association games were resumed in the Hessian upper house. In the post-war years, this was initially the second level of play below the new upper leagues , in whose southern season only three Hessian teams (Eintracht and FSV Frankfurt and Kickers Offenbach) were included. Accordingly, the second level was very busy (1945/46: "Landesliga Großhessen-Ost", 1946/47 "Landesliga Frankfurt-Ost", then "Landesliga Hessen"). Even if you could rightly call yourself “Hanau's number 1” during these years, VfB 06 could not hold the class for long. In 1948/49 only four victories this season were not enough to keep the league, and the Großauheimers have not been able to return to the highest Hessian league since then. One last attempt was made in the round of 1953/54, when VfB 06 won the relay championship just before 1860 Hanau , but failed in the promotion round to Union Niederrad . Only a few years later they disappeared into the lower divisions.

It took until the end of the 1970s for VfB 06 Großauheim to develop a nationally competitive team again. Returned to the district class in 1979, the following season managed to march through to the state league, where they even played for the title and thus for promotion in the 1980/81 debut season. In the decider against SpVgg Dietesheim on June 6, 1981, they were even in the lead thanks to a goal from striker Dietmar Heck, but lost the match in front of 7,000 spectators in the end with 1: 2. The successful team then gradually fell apart and in 1984 VfB had to start again in the lower leagues. Since then, the first team has played in the district and county leagues of the Frankfurt soccer region. Jens Schuhmacher (1999), Martin Jung (2005) and Serhat Agirtas (2012) are among the most important and most famous players.

Venue

The sports field on the Lindenau was a rough, narrow former parade ground in the early years. The club grounds at that time were significantly enlarged from the beginning of the 1950s, supplemented by a second playing field and finally, with the construction of a permanent changing room, the first building on the sports grounds was built, with a week of festivities with the climax of a friendly game against the reigning German champions Borussia Dortmund (3 : 8) In June 1956, they not only celebrated the 50th anniversary of the association, but also the successful expansion of the home. On July 2, 1968, the next step was taken with the modernization of the facility and Borussia Fulda welcomed it on the occasion of the stadium inauguration (1: 2). The area on the Lindenau is still the home of today's district association.
