The Association League Hessen (until 2008 Landesliga Hessen ) is the second highest division under the care of the Hessian Football Association and since the season 2008/09 the sixth highest division in the German league system . It is divided into the three seasons north , middle and south .
history
As the second highest league at association level and fourth highest level overall, the group league replaced the then 2nd amateur league in 1965 as the substructure of the amateur league Hessen . The group league was renamed the national league in 1978. With the introduction of the regional leagues in 1994, the regional league was only fifth class. At an extraordinary association day of the Hessian Football Association on February 23, 2008, the renaming of the state league in association league was decided. With the introduction of the 3rd league in the same year, the association league has since formed the sixth level in the German league system , but still the second highest division in Hessian football below the Hessenliga.

Promotion and relegation regulations
The following promotion and relegation regulations apply for the 2020/21 season:
- The champions of the three seasons go straight to the Hessenliga .
- In each association league, up to five clubs are relegated directly to the corresponding group leagues. (Guide number: 17)
- A relegation will only take place upwards this year.
Previous masters
As a rule, the respective relay champions rise to the higher-class football Hessen league (Football Oberliga Hessen up to 2008 and first football amateur league Hessen up to 1978). With the reintroduction of the regional league and the third league , all runners-up in the 1993/94 and 2006/07 seasons were promoted directly. Until the end of the 2007/08 season, due to the regulations of the Hessian Football Association, it was customary for a championship title of a second or amateur team of a club, including the runner-up - provided it was the first team of a club - to rise in a relay .
At the beginning of the 1994/95 season, the Hessian Football Association introduced a relegation round with the three runners-up from the regional leagues at the time and a representative of the Oberliga Hessen. There - different from year to year - between one and three additional starting places in the top division were awarded. Between 2005 and 2008 it was purely a round of promotion, as only the three runners-up played the other starting places.
The following table shows the champions of the respective association leagues since 1965.
