Soccer

history

VfB Ginsheim has its origins in 1916, when the football club “Alemannia 1916” was founded. On January 13, 1924, after various renaming, it became the "Sportverein 1924". It was not until 1924 that the club joined the football association and took part in organized game play. The geographic and political situation of Ginsheim meant that in 1924 the sports club had to play in the Mainz district, Wiesbaden and the Mainspitze district. Only the political reorganization after the Second World War created clear conditions here. Since February 1946 the club has been called "Verein für Ballspiele" when a new name had to be found after World War II, as the victorious powers had forbidden the reuse of old club names in order to come to terms with the past.

The club was originally founded as a football club, but there have been repeated efforts to expand the range of sports on offer to include other sports. A handball department was founded in 1924, and athletes were added in 1928. Even after World War II, four teams played field handball and in 1950 VfB tried a table tennis department. However, none of the departments mentioned gained greater importance. After a few years, they stopped playing again. Today only football is played again. Seventeen teams started in the youth area of the club in summer 2016. Between 1971 and 1991, "Charly" Mähn , who came from the Ginsheim youth football team, played in the 2. Bundesliga for the clubs 1. FSV Mainz 05 and SC Freiburg . Later, with Sandro Schwarz (including 1. FSV Mainz 05) and Abdelaziz Ahanfouf (including 1. FSV Mainz 05, Arminia Bielefeld ) other former youth players made the leap into the professional field.

For years the footballers were in the lower divisions, it was not until the 1998/99 game year that the team was so solid that they moved into the Darmstadt West district league with great flying colors under coach Klaus Fiederer. The biggest success so far was the 2016/17 championship in the association league, when the team from Spvgg. 03 Neu-Isenburg was relegated to second place and thus promoted to the Hessen league under the coaching team of Artur Lemm / Carsten Hennig .
