The VfR Groß-Gerau 1916 e. V. is a soccer club from Groß-Gerau . The club had its heyday from the 1971/72 season when it was promoted to the Oberliga Hessen (at that time the third highest soccer division in Germany). This class could be held until the 1978/79 season.

VfR Groß-Gerau plays its home games in the VfR sports arena on Geschwister-Scholl-Straße on the edge of Groß-Gerau city center.

history

Founded in the middle of the First World War (March 15, 1916) as SC Hassia, the club took the name SV on January 25, 1925 and merged with TV 1846 to form TSG twelve years later. In 1945 it became the culture and sports community, from which the VfR emerged four years later. In the same year, today's venue on Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse was inaugurated, which in the 1950s mostly saw four-league football.

In 1966 the A-youth of the green-whites became Hessian runner-up. The successful youthful self around goalkeeper Erich Maus then first shot VfR into the district class in the 1968/69 season and surprisingly marched through to the group league. The legacy of Karl Sadtler as trainer was taken over in the following season by sports teacher Heinz Wassermann , formerly Rot-Weiss Essen and FSV Mainz 05 . 1970/71 still barely prevented by SV Wiesbaden on the next march (in the Hessen League), the team finally reached Hessen's "gut Stubb" in the following season. The players who contributed to bringing the third championship to Groß-Gerau within just four years were: Winfried Bambach, Rudolf Bender, Carlo Fadda, Oswald Habann, Peter Heidenreich, Paul Fich, Dieter Hess, Volker Kunz, Hans Langer , Udo Lischka, Dieter Lochmüller, Erich Maus, Horst Plönzke, Wolfgang Plönzke, Klaus Rimasch. Manfred Schaffner, Karl Schwob, Bernhard Swoboda, Wolfgang Streit.

The first third division season started with a new 800-seat grandstand. In the second half of the season, Wolfgang Kaniber , previously a professional and successful goalscorer at VfL Osnabrück , Racing Strasbourg and Opel Rüsselsheim , replaced Heinz Wassermann and acted as player coach. After a playoff against SV 09 Hofheim (3-0), the class was held at the end of the first season. In the years that followed, the team was gradually strengthened with experienced players such as Volker Rapp, Rolf Hahl, Jochen Schmaltz, Rainer Lange (all SV Darmstadt 98 ), Klaus Rieger ( Wormatia Worms ) or Richard Engel ( FSV Frankfurt ) and also with experienced players Trainer added. From season 74/75 the coach was called Erich Gehbauer (previously 1. FSV Mainz 05 and FSV Frankfurt). And a former German champion (from the '59 team from Eintracht Frankfurt) worked as a trainer in Groß-Gerau: Dieter Stinka took over the helm in the 1976/77 season . He was followed by his former companion at Eintracht, Erich Bäumler . The years in the Hessenliga were directly linked to the name Hans Surma. The long-time chairman of the VfR, an entrepreneur in Groß-Gerau, repeatedly made financial resources available, without which well-known players could not have been brought to the district town. 1978/79 ended membership in the Hessenliga, the VfR had to return to the state league, from which he also said goodbye in 1985. In the preliminary round of the 1982/83 season Werner Lorant was briefly able to exude Bundesliga flair as a coach in Groß-Gerau before he switched from Eintracht Frankfurt to FC Schalke 04 in his main job as a player and therefore had to give up his position at VfR again. And Willibald Weiss , who was a coach at the end of the 1980s, was previously active as a Bundesliga professional at Rot-Weiss Essen and SV Darmstadt 98. 1997 was followed by promotion to the national league, in which the club was able to spend three more seasons. The first team of VfR Groß-Gerau is currently playing in the regional football league (Darmstadt region).
