career

Rot-Weiss Essen, 1960 to 1964

In the 1960/61 season, the young player Heinz Wassermann was used by coach Willi Multhaup twice in the top division team of RW Essen. He made his debut on September 18, 1960 in a 1: 3 home defeat against Viktoria Cologne in the then first class of the Oberliga West. He played in the World Cup system of left wing runners and acted on the defensive alongside teammates like Fritz Herkenrath , Adolf Steinig , Otto Rehhagel and Heinz Wewers . Since his second use on December 18, 1960 against Hamborn 07 was also accompanied by a defeat and the team from Bergeborbeck was heavily involved in the relegation battle, he did not get any further use until the end of the round. After relegation, he played for the German champions of the year 1955 in a total of 27 games in the 2nd division West between 1961 and 1963, before he had to record eleven further appearances in the debut year 1963/64 of the newly introduced Regionalliga West ( 1 goal). For the 1964/65 season, the strong defender Mainz 05 joined the Regionalliga Südwest.

1. FSV Mainz 05, 1964 to 1970

In his first season in Mainz, the man from Essen was part of the regular line-up of the zero five trained by coach Heinz Baas with 32 appearances and two goals . The eleventh place in the league, however, satisfied the fewest at Bruchweg. The games in the cup became a sporting highlight thanks to excellent performances during the season. First, the zero fives prevailed in the southwest against Eintracht Bad Kreuznach (3: 1), Hassia Bingen (6: 2), SV Hildburg Elkenroth (4: 1) and with a 4: 0 win at TuS Neuendorf in the fourth round and thus moved into the DFB Cup . In January and February 1965 they eliminated two Bundesliga clubs in the first two rounds. On January 16, Werder Bremen came to Mainz as leaders of the Bundesliga with 23:13 points and were defeated 1-0 in front of 12,000 spectators. Wassermann played as the right wing runner and primarily fought against the Bremen inner trio with Max Lorenz , Arnold Schütz and Willi Soya . Bremen managed to win the German championship at the end of the round . On February 6th, Wassermann and colleagues wrestled a 2-2 draw after extra time from TSV 1860 Munich under coach Max Merkel in front of 20,000 spectators. A fortnight later, on February 17th, they even managed a 2-1 away win in the stadium on Grünwalder Strasse . The European Cup finalist from Munich competed in the attack with Alfred Heiß , Hans Rebele , Rudi Brunnenmeier , Peter Grosser and Rudolf Steiner . In both duels with the “Löwen”, Wassermann, as the left defender, prevented a goal from international striker Alfred Heiß. In the quarter-finals on February 27, the Mainz team won a goalless draw from 1. FC Nürnberg in front of 24,000 spectators until the second half, before the “club” prevailed 3-0 in the second 45 minutes. After 22 Bundesliga games, the Franconians were in fourth place with 27:17 points, tied with second and third place, traveled to Rheinhessen and had outstanding performers in their ranks with Ludwig Müller , Heinz Strehl and Ferdinand Wenauer . Wassermann had mostly dealt with the former Kiel right winger Manfred Greif in the duels .

In the third regional league season 1965/66, Wassermann just missed the Bundesliga promotion round with the new playmaker Horst Hülß with third place. A convincing second half of the season with 23: 7 points - there were only two defeats and three draws in addition to ten wins - was not enough in the end to prevent the champions FK Pirmasens and runner-up 1. FC Saarbrücken from entering the promotion round. Constancy on the defensive played a significant role in the success of this round, where a well-rehearsed block acted with goalkeeper Kurt Planitzer , the defenders Helmut Müllges and Wassermann, the outside runners Günther Dutine and Kurt Sauer , as well as in central defense with Gerhard Görlach and Carlo Storck only had 39 goals conceded in 30 league games.

In his third and fourth Mainz seasons in the Regionalliga Südwest, the Red-Whites reached fourth place in 1967 and 1968 and the defender had never missed a league game in three rounds in a row. In the 1968/69 season he converted two penalties on November 10, 1968 in a 3-5 home defeat against TuS Neuendorf. Mainz was only 13th under coach Karl-Heinz Wettig .

The uncompromising defender played his last regional league game on May 17, 1970 in the 2-6 away defeat at the Ellenfeldstadion against Borussia Neunkirchen . In the game against the team of coach Kurt Sommerlatt he fought right winger Jürgen Pontes and scored a goal for Mainz. After a total of 180 regional league and four DFB Cup games in the jersey of the zero five in the summer of 1970, the former Essener ended his career.

The tough and strong defender joined the green-whites from VfR Groß-Gerau in the Hessian amateur camp for the 1970/71 season .
