Adolf Steinig (born October 7, 1939 ) is a former German soccer player who played 25 Bundesliga games for Rot-Weiss Essen in the 1966/67 season.

Career

Steinig went through the youth stations at Rot-Weiss Essen and made his debut on November 9, 1958 under coach Raymond Schwab in what was then the first-class football league West . In the 1: 3 away defeat against Fortuna Düsseldorf, the young player acted in the then usual World Cup system as a right wing runner alongside experienced teammates Fritz Herkenrath , Heinz Wewers and Helmut Rahn . In the next two rounds, 1959/60 and 1960/61, the defensive player belonged to the RWE core line-up under coach Willi Multhaup . Surprisingly, the team of club boss Georg Melches rose in the summer of 1961 in the 2nd League West . Steinig is led with 56 league appearances and one goal. In the last two rounds of the old league system, 1961/62 and 1962/63, the red-whites did not come in fifth and sixth in the second division. Steinig completed 57 competitive games in the 2nd League West. Even in the first two rounds of the newly introduced Football Regionalliga West , 1963/64 and 1964/65, the team from Hafenstrasse under coach Fred Harthaus could not intervene in the fight for promotion. In the third regional league season, 1965/66 , RWE reached the runner-up under coach Fritz Pliska . In the promotion round Steinig and his colleagues prevailed against FC St. Pauli , 1. FC Saarbrücken and 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 and made it to the Bundesliga.

On the first day of the 1966/67 season, August 20, 1966, Steinig made his Bundesliga debut with the Red-Whites at MSV Duisburg. In the 2-0 defeat, he played on his regular position of right-back. Also on matchday 34, June 3, 1967, in the 0-1 defeat at VfB Stuttgart by a goal by Gilbert Gress , he defended for the team from Essen. Together with goalkeeper Fred-Werner Bockholt and Werner Kik , he formed the final triangle. As 18th in the table, RWE immediately relegated to the Regionalliga West. Steinig had played 25 Bundesliga games alongside players such as Heinz Simmet , Peter Dietrich , Willi Lippens , Herbert Weinberg and Willi Koslowski .

In the following two rounds in the Regionalliga, RWE reached the runner-up in 1967/68 and 1968/69 , Steinig was only used sporadically (14 games) under the coach Erich Ribbeck , Kuno Klötzer and Willi Vordenbäum . Now Kik formed the defender couple with Heinz Stauvermann . Steinig completed his last competitive game on December 15, 1968 in the away game against Lüner SV. The athletic and combative defender played until 1969 for the team from Bergeborbeck in the Oberliga, 2. Liga, Regionalliga and the Bundesliga . He came to 222 missions for RWE.

For the 1969/70 season he moved to SSVg Velbert , which had just been promoted to the Regionalliga West, but went straight back to the amateur camp after the 1969/70 season. In the blue-whites from the stadium to the sunflower in Velbert, Steinig added another 22 regional league appearances with one goal. Steinig remained in Velbert even after relegation and let his career end in the Association League Westphalia .
