He is said to have played for the Kickers in the 1946/47 season and ended his active career in 1947.

After the war he settled in the Ruhr area and spent parts of his coaching career at local clubs. At the beginning of the 1947/48 season he was brought on the initiative of football lobbyist Hans Gruber as the successor to the player- coach Hennes Hoffmann from Westerholt to Duisburger SpV , where he worked as a coach from 1947 to 1948. The Duisburg SpV then played in Group 3 of the Lower Rhine regional league. At the same time he trained the then district class club VfB Bottrop . Harthaus was group winners with the Duisburg game club and qualified for the promotion round to the Oberliga West . The Duisburg, however, failed because of Rot-Weiss Essen. On May 23, 1948, the DSV lost the home game with 1: 3. Harthaus then moved to the Oberliga Nord for FC St. Pauli , which he coached until April 1950. There he was replaced as trainer in April 1950 by Walter Risse . In the same season he took over the training of VfL Osnabrück on the 30th day of the 1949/50 season as the successor to Rudolf Oehme. Also in the 1950/51 season he coached the Osnabrück, with whom he reached 4th place in the Oberliga Nord. He then moved to FSV Frankfurt , which he coached in the 1951/52 season. After a coaching activity at TSV 1860 Munich in the 1952/53 season, he returned to Duisburg SpV in 1953 as the successor to Herbert Spartz, whom he coached until 1958. Already in his first year after returning he reached the championship in the 2nd League West and rose with the DSV in the Oberliga West. In 1958 he went to Hamborn 07 , where he stayed until 1963. He could not qualify for the Bundesliga and took over from 1963 to 1965 as a coach at Rot-Weiss Essen in the Regionalliga West. From 1965 to 1967 he coached VfB Bottrop and 1967 Bonner SC . In the 1967/68 season Harthaus coached SpVgg Bad Pyrmont . There he was the club's first coach who decided the team line-up.
